In tennis, it’s easy to focus only on the big things — your racket, your technique, your movement.
But in reality, matches are often decided by small details.
We’ve already talked about choosing the right racket, shoes, and court surface. But there’s another layer that many players underestimate — accessories. These are the “invisible helpers” that can seriously affect your comfort, control, and even your health on court.
Let’s go through three simple but essential things every player should have.
Wristbands & Headbands: Keep Control and Stay Focused
Tennis is intense. You will sweat. A lot. And that’s not just uncomfortable, it directly affects your game.
- Grip matters. When sweat runs down your arm into your palm, your overgrip becomes slippery. The racket can start twisting in your hand, which means less control and a higher risk of injury. A simple wristband on your playing hand helps keep your grip dry and stable.

- Eyes on the ball. Sweat in your eyes is worse than it sounds — it stings and breaks your focus at the worst possible moment. A headband or bandana keeps the sweat away so you can stay locked in during rallies.

Cross Court tip: Go for wider wristbands (around 7–10 cm). Thin ones get soaked very quickly and stop working almost immediately.
Dampers: Small Thing, Big Difference
A damper is a small silicone piece you place between the strings of your racket. Many people think it’s just about sound — but it’s much more than that.
- Less stress on your body. Every time you hit the ball, your strings vibrate. Without a damper, that vibration travels into your wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Over time, this can lead to discomfort or even injuries like tennis elbow. A damper helps reduce that impact.
- Better feel. With a damper, the sound of the shot becomes softer and more solid. It may seem like a small thing, but it actually helps you feel the ball better and gives more confidence in your shots.

Which one to choose?
- Small “button” dampers — keep more natural feel.
- Longer “worm” dampers — maximum softness and comfort.
Caps & Visors: See Better, Play Better
- Control the light. Bright sun and glare can make it really hard to track the ball, especially on serves or high shots. A cap or visor helps you see clearly and react faster.
- Stay cool. Modern tennis caps are lightweight and breathable. They protect you from the sun while helping your body stay cool.

Cap or visor?
- Cap = more protection (including your scalp).
- Visor = better airflow.
It’s Also About Your Mind
Accessories are not just physical — they can also help mentally.
Take Jannik Sinner, for example. He almost always plays in his cap. For many players, small things like this create a sense of focus — like stepping into a “game mode.”

In tennis, confidence often comes from routine. And sometimes, even a small detail can help you stay calm and focused.

Tennis accessories may seem minor, but they make a real difference.
- A wristband keeps your grip stable.
